How to Save an Instagram Reel File on iPhone

On iPhone, a browser download normally goes to Files first—not straight into Photos.

In one sentence

Save an authorised public Instagram Reel to iPhone Files, then move a compatible MP4 to Photos. Includes troubleshooting when the file is missing.

Copy the individual Reel link

Open the Reel in Instagram, use Share and copy the link. Make sure it is the Reel itself rather than a profile or Explore page.

Analyse the public link

Open the Instagram Reels page on Save Video Online, paste the link, accept the rights confirmation and check the detected media.

Choose Compatible MP4

This is the safest starting point for iPhone playback. Higher-quality or unusual codec combinations may open in Files but not import cleanly into Photos.

Find the file in Downloads

Open the Files app, choose Browse, then Downloads. Depending on Safari settings, Downloads may sit under iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.

Move it to Photos

Open the MP4 in Files, tap Share, then choose Save Video. When Save Video is absent, the codec may not be compatible with Photos even though another player can open it.

Practical checklist

  • Use the Reel’s complete public URL.
  • Choose Compatible MP4 first.
  • Check Files → Downloads.
  • Use Share → Save Video to move it to Photos.
  • Use Instagram Accounts Centre for a full backup of your own account.
